Sights of Khiva - Anushakhan's baths

Anushakhan's baths

Deep historical traditions have hammoms – eastern baths. In Khiva baths were constructed in 1657 at the time of Abulgazikhan's state. National name of hammams is– Anushakhan's baths.

By tradition all hammams are deepened to the earth, one only domes are visible over the earth surface. For what such originality of construction was necessary? The answer is simple. Thermal insulation of walls of a bathing room was reached in this way. Heating of east bath was made by means of smoke channels which were laid under floor of rooms. Near to a boiler room there were special wells from which people used to get water for a bath. Except main room in eastern baths there were also small halls, each of these halls carried out certain functions.

If you want to make excursion on eastern bath, you for this purpose need to go down on a small ladder. You will get to the first room of hammam which serves chasging room at the same time and resort place. And to get to central hall where there passed ablution procedure, it is necessary to pass through suite of other halls. When bath is functioning, in each hall on way to central one temperature was gradually raised. Round the main hall there are various utility rooms.

Hammoms of Khiva city personify examples of eastern originality and are the most ancient constructions of this kind in the city territory.
