In the middle of the nineteenth century in Khiva was constructed madrasah of Alpakulikhan. This historical construction by right is considered as one of the best achievements of architecture of Khoresm of the late Middle Ages. Governor of Khiva - Alpakulikhan was an initiator of construction of this building. And the madrasah bears his name. It was one of the largest educational institutions of Khiva city. Now in this madrasah there is a museum with name of Abu Ali ibn Sino – a museum of history of medicine.
Alpakulikhan madrasah is between Palvan-Darvaza’s eastern gate and a covered market – Tim. Areas for construction of madrasah were not sufficient, therefore it was required to destroy a part of city wall. As a result the southern wing of madrasah pressed Palvan-Darvaz's northern trading row, and the northern wing adjoins Tim's arches. Main facade of a building leaves in a yard of other madrasah – Hodzhamberdybi.
Yard of Alpakulikhan madrasah consists from two-storeyed hudjras, which number makes ninety nine. Also height of two floors is occupied by big premises of madrasah – darskhana and halls of winter mosque. On the first floor of several hudjr once there was a city library. This library was founded by khan, and its maintenance was carried out at the expense of income Alpakulikhan's Tim and caravanserai. Students of all Khiva madrasahs used books of this library.
Scheme of building of Alpakulikhan’s madrasah is traditional. But this building is distinguished with rich decorative furnish. Main facade is decorated with majolica of Khorezm type in blue and black-and-white tones. Ornaments and color scale of majolica are very various. Real masters- artists-ceramists of that time have successfully selected character of drawing, its scales and color score depending on that decorated place by them. The greatest impression creates a harmonous facade of portal. Majolica that is used for decoration is especially bright and colourful.
